Alcohol Abuse Effects - 5 Physical Effects of Alcohol Abuse

Human Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

When you think of the worst cities for alcohol abuse, you probably think of the party-loving cities: Los Angeles or Las Vegas. However, a recent study by The Daily Beast, which gathered information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), LA and Las Vegas didn't even make the top twenty-five. The number one city of drinkers turns out to be Boston, flanked by cities in Wisconsin, Nevada and Texas.

The Study

The surveys did not differentiate between alcoholism (addiction to alcohol) and alcohol abuse. It was found that the average Boston adult drinks over fifteen drinks per month. Approximately seven percent of the adult population were labeled "heavy drinkers" (more than two drinks a day for men and more than one drink a day for women). Twenty percent were denoted "binge drinkers", meaning they consume at list five drinks in one sitting for men, or at least four drinks in a single period of time for women.

This year's "drunkest cities" list is the second of its kind. Last year Milwaukee topped the list. The Daily Beast showed us this year's top ten most popular drinking cities:

1. Boston, Massachusetts

2. Springfield, Massachusetts

3. Milwaukee, Wisconsin

4. Reno, Nevada

5. San Antonio, Texas

6. Chicago, Illinois

7. Austin, Texas

8. St. Louis, Missouri

9. San Diego, California

10. Tucson, Arizona

Bar Hopping

Alcohol addiction is hard to recognize. What begins as a social instrument turns rapidly into a survival crutch. In cities like Boston, bar hopping after work or on weekends is the "norm". Tourists seek out a pub crawl from Whiskeys to Boston Beer Works, and it's all within walking distance.

It may seem like a good time and be touted as such, but in truth it doesn't provide a very good return. What you get is a hazy memory of being uncoordinated and acting very out-of-character; slowed reaction time, even when no longer drunk; memory problems; withdrawal symptoms and hangovers the day after; and sometimes overdose and death. The number one cause of automobile accidents is alcohol. Children suffer neglect and abuse at the hand of alcoholic parents. All in all, it does not provide very good bang for your buck.

Teen Drinking

Adult drinking habits inevitably spill over to their children. While the study reviewed surveys from adults, other studies show that drinking habits among teens are continuing to worsen, particularly in rural communities. The Daily Beast report also reveals heavy alcohol use in the Midwest.

Alcohol is the leading cause of death among teens, and yet it is their favorite drug. Drinking often leads to heavier drug use, which is why addiction experts urge parents to talk to their children about drugs and alcohol. Those who do find that their children are far more likely to become drug-free adults. Studies show that parents who are lenient on the subject of teen drinking, or those who drink heavily themselves, typically find their children relying on drugs or alcohol to get them through high school.

How it can help with the treatment of patients so they will not get addicted again? Even simple exercising can help them get out of it because they will use their energies in something positive. When they are in need and couldn’t control themselves, you can simply give them pain killer to help them relax.

Alcohol abuse effects can be far-reaching and devastating. The effects of alcohol abuse not only have consequences for the drinker but those around her or him as well. Alcohol abuse effects can be both psychological and physical. Alcohol consumption causes changes in behavior. The physical effects of alcohol abuse can be experienced with as little as one or two drinks -- impaired judgment and coordination needed to operate a car safely may result in the drinker having an accident.

Alcoholism is an illness where alcoholic beverage consumption is at a level that interferes with the person's health and negatively impacts social, family or occupational responsibilities. Alcohol abusers are drinkers that may drink excessively at various times with resulting immediate alcohol abuse effects at the time of excess alcohol consumption.
The immediate physical effects of alcohol abuse can be experienced as soon as ten minutes after drinking begins. With continued alcohol consumption on that occasion, the immediate effects of alcohol abuse worsen and become more serious.

Here are five of the immediate physical alcohol abuse effects:

1. Inhibitions Become Reduced - at a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05, changes in a person's behavior begins to be noticeable. Alcohol abuse effects and reduced inhibitions can put a person at higher risk for actions they would otherwise not participate in, such as sexual activity, continued drinking or illegal drug use.

2. Loss of Muscle Control - at the level of 0.10, slurred speech will likely be evident. Impaired judgement and poor coordination are physical effects of alcohol abuse that can lead to falls and accidents.

3. Memory Loss and/or Blackouts - since alcohol depresses the brain's control mechanisms, as blood alcohol levels increase, periods of time and certain situations and events may not be remembered afterward.

4. Stupor - at a blood alcohol concentration of 0.40, a person can hardly function, acting seriously dazed, disoriented and confused.

5. Coma - at a blood alcohol level of 0.50, a person is at risk for coma, which can be life-threatening. And at this level or higher, respiratory paralysis and death become very much a possibility.

Other alcohol abuse effects that are short-term include nausea, hangovers, headaches and fatigue. The longer a person abuses alcohol over time, the higher the chances of other alcohol abuse effects being experienced and alcohol dependency developing. The most severe form of alcoholism is 'alcohol dependency'. Physical alcohol dependence is characterized by withdrawal symptoms when alcohol consumption is interrupted, by tolerance to the effects of alcohol abuse and by the presence of alcohol-related illnesses.

Malnutrition can develop from a reduced appetite plus inadequate absorption of nutrients in the intestinal tract and from consuming 'empty' calories in alcohol. Calories from alcohol are called 'empty' calories since alcohol contains no beneficial nutrients, vitamins or minerals.

And with continued alcohol consumption and abuse over years, many of the body organs will be affected. Alcohol is especially harmful to the liver since the liver does most of the work of breaking down alcohol. Alcohol destroys liver cells, and it destroys the ability of liver cells to regenerate. This condition leads to progressive imflammatory injury to the liver and eventually can result in cirrhosis of the liver.

Additional long term alcohol abuse effects include damage to the brain, high blood pressure, heart muscle damage, nerve damage, pancreatitis, bleeding in the esophagus, erectile dysfunction in men, fetal alcohol syndrome in the offspring of alcoholic women, insomnia, depression and increased cancer risks.

If you or someone you know may have problems with alcohol and you'd like to learn more about alcoholism and perhaps seek help, there are proven resources available. It is never too late to begin recovery from alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse effects.

Obsessive Compulsive Spectrum Disorder

Although the figures vary greatly from country to county based on population and cultural behaviours, there are still way too many folks on this planet who die every single day of the year as a direct result of drinking too much alcohol. So just how does alcohol abuse kill people? Well they don't have to wait for cirrhosis of the liver or other alcohol related illnesses that's for sure. Kids and teens often meet their demise through a binge far too great for their bodies to handle. A lot of inexperienced drinkers are the victims of alcohol related mischief such as; driving, swimming, general showing off, and accepting crazy challenges to impress peers while intoxicated.

Another unnecessary way on how alcohol abuse kills folks is that of drunken brawls which turn fatal. Fights that were derived from power driven arguments. Arguments that would never have gotten so heated had those involved not been under the influence. These are tragic incidents that most definitely did not have to happen! They are all too common these days as drinkers consume more booze than they can handle. These moments of madness sometimes result in dead bodies and sheer pandemonium as charges of murder and man slaughter are brought onto folks who probably wouldn't say boo to a goose while sober.

Alcohol Abuse Takes Lives in more ways than one!

There are no big secrets as to why alcohol makes folks act in ways they would not normally behave. After all, alcohol is what's known as a psychoactive drug. Simply put, this means it affects the mind, the mood, and other mental processes. It's because alcohol changes brain chemistry that it appeals to so many. Just about everyone likes the way it makes them feel to a greater or lesser degree! The problem is that it's lethal in high doses. Far too many people meet their demise simply because they don't know when they've had enough of the stuff.

Alcohol is a poison: When people vomit from drinking too much alcohol, this is triggered by the body's natural defence mechanism telling the stomach it has consumed more poison than the body can handle. The brain sends a signal to the stomach telling it to get rid of the stuff, just as it would with any other noxious food beverage or substance.

Vomiting is another way in which alcohol abuse kills people! Not all those who have drank copious amounts of alcohol get to vomit during conscious hours. Some pass out and fall into a deep sleep before the brain has had chance to signal the stomach to throw up. If nausea is induced during this time, people can and do choke on their own vomit and literally die in their sleep.

Others who pass out from drinking too much alcohol may never wake again. When the concentration of alcohol is too high, those areas of the brain which are responsible for controlling life's functions can become so depressed that they simply fail to function any more. And when the brain fails to function, then so does man!

Alcoholic poisoning can be fatal: Most of us at some time during our lives have been sick from drinking too much. It's often laughed off the following day as a silly session and the one suffering often makes a vow never to drink again. Of course, this promise is usually one of many in the course of a lifetime, and as soon as the headaches have gone and the stomach has settled, the drinker is ready for the next spree. But the fact of the matter is that far too many people, both young and old, men and women, are dying unnecessarily as a direct result of alcohol abuse. Sadly, this is a problem which is on the increase globally.

Alcohol Health Related Deaths: Putting aside the accidental deaths caused by excessive alcohol consumption, there are many other ways in which long term abuse can result in premature deaths through alcohol related health issues. Although many of these illnesses can be got without abusing alcohol, it's now a known fact that so many are induced by the excessive consumption of alcohol. Doctors agree that many of these health conditions most probably would not have occurred if alcohol had not been a factor.

Common alcohol related fatal diseases are: Breast cancer, mouth cancer, liver disease, heart disease, and stroke to name but a few. Still dying for a drink?
