Ang Mo Kio Compulsive Washing

Addiction is a major issue in the present age. From adults to teenagers and specially students everyone is addicted to wither alcohol, drugs, cigarette or more. In Ang Mo Kio does not just stop here because there are other types of addictions as well like pornography and sugar obsession. The real question is how to we control these addictions and protect our youth from ruining their future.

There is a need of addiction therapy in Ang Mo Kio because that is the only way we can save the society. Addiction basically is something that one should avoid because the consequences of being an addict are the same in all types of addictions. People normally do not take it seriously, but once they get caught in some kind of problem, they realize how it affected their lives in a very bad way. So, whether you are suffering from addiction or substance abuse, you have to get away from it as early as possible.

How Does Alcohol Abuse Kill People?

People have addictions which seem incomprehensible to people who don't
have those addictions. Take gambling as an example; non gamblers just don'
t understand how or why someone would spend every available opportunity
to sit in a casino and willingly dispose of all of their money. From an outside
view it looks like unbelievable stupidity. It seems to be a boring, repetitious
and frustrating hobby at best. On a logical level we wonder why those
people haven't worked out that 'the house always wins'. The gambler loves
to dance around and brag about the times he did win even though we all see
that the final outcome is that he has no home, no money in the bank and a
huge credit debt. Yet, on a small winning streak he can be completely
oblivious to this fact. Without analyzing all the complexities of a gambling
addiction, we can summarize it as this: The gamblers belief in winning the big
one is greater than his belief in the reality of what has happened, what is
happening and what will predictably happen. In short, the dream is more
real than the reality.

The same can be said for drugs, alcohol, food, cigarettes, sex and all
addictions. The reality of an addicts life might be sheer devastation and yet
the belief that one more of whatever will be what the dream expects itself to
be.

It seems to me that a dream can hook into a compartment within the mind
and become completely embedded. It is like a sacred place and it contains
all we want. It could be wealth, happiness, love, security or whatever. We
all have desires and we all have dreams and we all have a place in out minds
in which we live out those possibilities. The gambler might have originally
had a dream of a big win. He probably had a couple of good wins initially
and that reinforced the dream. Somehow though, the gambler became
addicted to the dream. The big win becomes a primary point of reference
and in time all experiences loop back to that point of reference. That is, all
information and every experience gets filtered through the point of reference.
Some refer to this as classic denial. I call it 'The happy place'.

It seems impossible to talk logic or facts to an addict. They filter out what
you say; they might pretend to listen, or they argue with you or blank you
out completely. Their eyes glaze over, their ears shut you out and you can
almost hear them singing lah, lah lah as you speak. They have gone to the
happy place.

This is probably familiar to anyone who has had a relationship with someone
with one of these major addictions. What is less obvious is that most of us
are operating under a very similar pattern - and that is: Obsession.

Obsessions can be hidden or often seem harmless or perhaps a little quirky.
Someone else's obsession may be boring to us, but we don't pay much
attention as we are rarely affected by them to any real degree. Many of us
don't even know that we are obsessed. Yes, we all have our little happy
places and we all filter facts to suit our delusions. But, for many of us, we
are destroying our lives or at least our potential lives.

I remember when a friend of mine became obsessed with her boss. When
she first started talking about him I thought she sounded like a schoolgirl
with a secret crush. Within a short period of time, I wondered if she was
actually stalking the poor guy. (He was happily married and did not flirt or
encourage my friend in any way.) For almost two years she talked about
him as if they were lovers. Almost every conversation we had somehow
looped back to him. She would say things like 'Alan went to Bali last year,
so this year, I am going to Bali and I will stay at the same hotel that he
stayed in. Alan loves blue, so I am going to wear blue every day. I'm
learning to play tennis now, so Alan and I will have more in common. Alan
loves Italian food, so I...' Then there were the magical signs that Alan was
'the one,' 'We both have an older brother and a younger sister. He has a
cousin called Linda and so do I. Alan's name has four letters in it and so
does mine'. Almost everything she said started with, 'Did I mention
Alan...Alan would love this...That reminds me of Alan...Alan has one of
those...' Finally, it came to "I can't make any plans - Alan might call." and
"When Alan and I are married..."

This example might sound a little extreme or even delusional, but really, I
know heaps of women who think and live this way. I couldn't count the
number of women I know, who meet a guy, and by the second date start
talking obsessively and possessively about him. Not in a "I wonder or I
hope someday...' kind of a way either, but in a 'This is real and true...' kind
of way.

Mark is obsessed by horses. He spends hours every weekend searching
antique shops and the Internet to buy anything - that is, everything he can
find that has something to do with horses. He has ornaments, statues,
posters and jewelry stuffed in to three rooms of his home. He doesn't even
know what he owns and much of it has not even been unpacked. In effect,
half of his home is storage - crammed to the ceilings with boxes of stuff filled
with horse paraphernalia. He is not a jockey or an owner, nor is he a
farmer. He has no real relationship with horses at all. But he bores everyone
senseless with his endless conversations about horses.

Religion is another common obsession. I have had to sever friendships over
this one. I have had people break down and weep for my soul and plead
with me to listen. One woman really distressed me when she turned every
news report into a sign of 'the end of the world'. No matter what I said, she
seemed to answer with something along the lines of Satan talking through
me. Almost everything I said or did resulted in a biblical quote of the
Armageddon variety.

Rob was obsessed with money; he was a wealthy entrepreneur but didn't
seem to enjoy life very much. I remember traveling on a train with him and
commenting on the ocean views. He ignored me completely, and I noticed
that he was looking out the opposite window. "That land will be worth a
fortune one day. If I could subdivide..." I also gave him a gift once and he
pulled it apart. I thought that he didn't like it, but it turned out he liked it so
much that he had dismantled it to see how it worked. He wanted to copy
and export them. When we went to restaurants he would compare prices
with other restaurants. Going anywhere with him was like spending a day
with, The Count from Sesame Street!

Julie was obsessed with her looks. Every time we met, she would ask what
I thought of her hair, clothes, shoes or skin. She spent most of her spare
time and money on beauty products, clothes and hair care. When we went
out, she would ask if she was slimmer or younger looking than other women
in the room. She constantly reapplied make up and fiddled with her hair and
clothes. Boring!!!!

Then there are the health conscious and illness obsessions. Sport and work
are often common obsessions. I wonder if all of us might have at least one
thing which we refer to or compare to, in an unconscious, obsessive way.

It's like there is one main point of reference within the mind which we filter
almost all of our thoughts through. What concerns me about obsessions is
that we close off our awareness to infinite possibilities. How do we get to
better ways or different ways, if we keep getting stuck at only one way?
How much of ourselves are we really seeing if we can only define ourselves
as one thing? I also wonder, what this mechanism is that hooks into this one
thing, and why we don't seem to recognize it or question it. When so many
of these obsessions are destructive or at least severely limiting, then why
won't we let go of them.

What's really interesting is that we see it so clearly in others, but probably
have never taken the time to question ourselves. Have a casual look in the
next few days and you might actually find one or more of your own. If it
serves you well then stay with it, but if not, then it might be worth trying to
change it or replace it. Apart from driving your friend's nuts or boring them
to death, you might actually find something a lot more worthwhile to obsess
about.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Treatment

How it can help with the treatment of patients so they will not get addicted again? Having friends and family, and even if you are the doctor of such a patient who is going through the addiction, you should help him in a simple way. Even simple exercising can help them get out of it because they will use their energies in something positive. When they are in need and couldn’t control themselves, you can simply give them pain killer to help them relax.

Cell phones have been around long enough by now that everyone at some point in their mobile life will run into a snag when they forget for a second just how fragile the tiny mobile devices are and make a mistake. This mistake can result in a cell phone, cracking its plastic case, breaking the LCD screen, ruining the touch pad or even damaging a few of the key features on the phone such as the video camera or the Bluetooth. Of course, there is also the ultimate snafu, the one that results in a cell phone getting completely submerged in water which never has a happy ending.

The ironic thing about an owning mobile phone is the fact that they are so easy to break despite the fact that people rarely handle them as such. Most people consider a mobile phone to be something they cannot live without since it keeps them in close contact with their entire professional and personal world with just the click of a button. With the addition of social networking capabilities and web browsers people are living their lives through the tiny virtual machines that allow them to connect to anyone anywhere for just a small price each month. Add in the fact that the gadgets work almost anywhere, and a cell phone is not an item that you can live without.

However, despite this constant dependence on mobile phones, people are yet to actually treat them as the highly sophisticated pieces of technology that they are. Video camcorders, laptops, and digital cameras are all items that people will carefully place in a padded bag, gently carry, and put away on a safe shelf once their use is no longer needed. Mobile phones on the other hand get tossed around from person to person, jammed into a purse next to dozens of other items including bottles with leaky lids from time to time, or tossed into a side pocket where they can be crushed or scratched with keys. It is for this reason that the field of broken cell phone repair has become a lucrative field.

While this can be good news for those who are trained at broken cell phone repair, this is bad news if you need to fix your broken cell phone because sometimes it can be just as costly to fix a broken phone as it is to repair it. The reason for this is due to the fact that your phone has so many features loaded into it every component must be handled separately and with a small margin for error. Add in the fact that there are not too many options when it comes to fixing your cell phone and you have the formula for an expensive repair.

Of course, if you have a more basic phone you may be able to get it repaired for less since there are not so many functions at stake, but nowadays even the simplest cell phones come loaded with a lot of extra features that can make fixing them still an expensive cost. Since the only other option is to purchase a new cell phone, most of the time you will have no other option but to shell out the money and hopefully learn your lesson for next time.

Smoking cessation is also a big task like any other type of addiction, so you have to majorly help the patient in it and never discourage them from getting away from addiction. You can even help them with simple words that motivate them towards the positive and leave addiction, which is in all cases a negative thing to practice. In this way, it becomes very easy for them to get rid of the bad habits.

There are so many other ways of helping such people, but you have to be patient with them in this case. Any type of forceful action can take them even deeper into the addiction problem, so you have to tackle this problem in a very sensible way. For doctors, it is an easy task because they know the protocols, but generally the friends and family must take good care of the situation if they know that the patient is going through the addiction phase.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder - Washing Hands, the Classic OCD Symptom

Addiction therapy includes the sessions that help the patient get away from any type of addiction they are facing. They are treated with medicines and with simple sitting sessions in which various types of exercises are done to help the patient get rid of the addiction. It is a simple protocol that the doctors follow. According to researchers, if it is done at the start and at the right time, it helps a person get rid of addiction as early as possible. Also, the therapy does not last very long if tackled at the start. So, keep the above benefits in mind too and get your addiction therapy done. You worth much better than just revolving around one thing in your life.

Schizophrenia Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

You only have to drive 20 yards down the road before you come across a teenager either talking on their mobile or texting and downloading information from another world onto their latest mobile gadget. There's an app for this and there's an app for that. You will struggle to find a teenager who will leave home without their mobile or cell phone, whatever you wish to call it, and you will struggle even further to find a teenager who does not own a mobile phone.

Texting has become a frightening obsession for many young people and has seemingly become their primary means of communication with their friends and even family. They live in a world where everything has to be relayed instantly and without the need to raise a voice or look someone in the eye.

Two teenagers in the same room, the same class, the same train will think nothing of sending one another a text to let each other know how they are feeling, where to meet or what they did the night before - not giving a it a second thought that they could just as easily greet one another with a friendly smile and speak to each other.

It has become socially unacceptable for teenagers not to own a mobile phone. They communicate with one another on a level that has created a sub culture and a language which can only be understood by them. Having said that, twenty or so years ago, teenagers had their own sub language in the spoken form anyway because teenagers need to set themselves apart from their elders and exist in a world which is exclusive to them.

Now, even text language has evolved and divided into sub languages over the last ten years. What was once 'cool' to type on text or email is now just 'so last year' and it has moved on. There are levels of texting within texting and it has developed into its own language with its own etiquette.

Levels of literacy and numeracy are reportedly poor in teens. You don't need statistics to point out these facts - you need only spend a few hours with a group of teenagers to realise that they place importance on other things. Whilst able to design a perfect power point presentation with spectacular graphics, using a pre-packaged suite on a well-known platform, teens seem unable to find the time to check their work for such things as spelling, grammar and so on. The basics are most definitely dead. With so many people arguing that there is no longer a need for a person to be able to spell for themselves because of spell checkers and predictive text, it seems that teenagers continue in ignorant bliss as to the detrimental effects that texting is having on them and the long term effects of society. We are even breeding a generation of teachers who aren't able to correct their pupils' work because they often don't know any different either.

Using text language means that teenagers are losing their ability to communicate effectively and articulately with others of all age groups and retain information for any length of time because they are no longer required to. Why retain something that is at your predisposal on a saved artificial memory? Learning the basic skills of life in the forms of literacy, numeracy, communication and the art of social interaction seem to be less and less fashionable and worryingly considered less and less important. What a shame that it is only like to become worse before it becomes any better.
