What is OCD?

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) affects approximately 2 - 3 % of Australians, and the same percentage worldwide. But unfortunately not a lot of people seek help as it is classed among society as an embarrassing disorder or disease.

OCD is classed as an anxiety disorder which carry with it Obsessions and Compulsions.

A person suffering OCD has something in their brain that tells them they must carry out certain tasks, rituals or behaviors or else something bad may occur. Carrying out the obsessions or compulsions might temporarily reduce the amount of anxiety they feel whilst the OCD is present.

However the anxiety starts building up again straight away..

Most OCD sufferers know that their brain thoughts are irrational and stupid, but the obsessions and compulsions are hard to resist and if resisted often lead to a sensation of sickness and also sever Anxiety.

How it can help with the treatment of patients so they will not get addicted again? Having friends and family, and even if you are the doctor of such a patient who is going through the addiction, you should help him in a simple way. Even simple exercising can help them get out of it because they will use their energies in something positive. When they are in need and couldn’t control themselves, you can simply give them pain killer to help them relax.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, or OCD is a subject that many people have an opinion about, but the phrase is also abused. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is characterized by consistent obsessions, accompanied by compulsions that disrupt a person's ability to handle everyday life. When you exhibit an obsessive personality you are constantly having unpleasant or disturbing thoughts, and/or impulses that plague your mind even when you try your best to eliminate them.

Everyone has had some thought, good or bad, nag at them from time to time. But to be obsessive means that you can't get the distressing thoughts out of your mind no matter how hard you try. These obsessions are usually negative in nature. They can be violent thoughts or even thoughts about germs and sanitation. These thoughts often cause you to be unproductive and withdrawn from society.

The compulsive part of OCD is the behavior associated with the obsessions. These compulsive tendencies are strong urges to follow through on your obsessive thoughts over and over. Even when the actions are understood as being completely unnecessary, like washing your hands five times in a row every hour, you can't help yourself. The only thing that can relieve the obsessive thoughts is performing the actions that the thoughts provide. These actions can include washing your hands repeatedly or some other cleaning regime, the constant counting of items, checking for hazards around your home, arranging and rearranging objects and related repetitive behaviors.

Treatment for OCD can be medical or natural. Antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and tricyclic clomipramine are often prescribed by your doctor to aid in the reduction of OCD symptoms. There are also natural remedies that can be used to treat OCD or the side-effects of the medicines prescribed. Some remedies include the use of St. John's Wart, which has been tested as rivaling the efficacy of medicines like SSRIs and Prozac. Other natural substances used to help in the treatment of OCD are Passiflora, Kava-Kava, Ginkgo Biloba, and Gotu Kola to name a few.

If you are still unsure of what is OCD (obsessive complusive disorder), or whether you or a loved one are a victim of OCD, you need to contact your physician or psychiatrist. He or she can definitely give you their diagnosis after an initial interview and testing. Compassion is important when you try to help a friend or family member as there is a great deal of self-consciousness in admitting this to others.

Smoking cessation is also a big task like any other type of addiction, so you have to majorly help the patient in it and never discourage them from getting away from addiction. You can even help them with simple words that motivate them towards the positive and leave addiction, which is in all cases a negative thing to practice. In this way, it becomes very easy for them to get rid of the bad habits.

There are so many other ways of helping such people, but you have to be patient with them in this case. Any type of forceful action can take them even deeper into the addiction problem, so you have to tackle this problem in a very sensible way. For doctors, it is an easy task because they know the protocols, but generally the friends and family must take good care of the situation if they know that the patient is going through the addiction phase.

Are you obsessed with cleaning?

Do you wish that you could stop but every time you try you get major anxiety to the point where it is just unbearable and you break down and give in?

I know what it's like to feel like I have to do things that I know are ridiculous and that don't make any sense.

One thing that I learned over the years is that when we are obsessed with something that there is always a fear driving that obsession.

What is the fear that drives you to clean all the time?

Do you fear germs, do you fear that if something isn't clean you'll look bad, or that it makes you a bad person?

As humans our behavior is driven by two things, to avoid pain or to receive pleasure.

In the case of obsessions, it's usually driven by the avoiding pain part.

So now that you know that you are trying to avoid some pain, it's important to really think about what that pain is that you're trying to avoid.

Once you isolate that fear. Think about how you can face it. Really think about this and spend time pondering the different ways you can face this fear. Once you generate some ideas, it's time to put them into practice.

Here are some ideas that you can put into practice right now that will guide you along your way.

1.) refuse to perform the rituals and wait to see if the thing you fear happens or not no matter how major it may be.

2.) get medication from your doctor to help you deal with the anxiety while you go through this transition period.

3.) Get a buddy to help you. Not to be a crutch, but to challenge you to take action in facing your fears.

4.) Don't give into to saying, "I just don't have the will power or the strength, just do it.

Take action: Just take action, period.
